This excursion connects students to Country through oral mapping, exploring Indigenous geographical knowledge while developing understanding of local and global connections and diverse ways of being, knowing, and doing.

Through this hands-on excursion and accompanying unit of work, students identify local native plants and explore the adaptations that help them survive and thrive after bushfires.

Students investigate the endangered Fishing Bat and use geographical skills to assess Blacktown Showground as a potential habitat, developing an understanding of environmental interconnections and human impact on ecosystems.

As part of a hands-on case study, students investigate water bugs in the reserve’s local waterways, exploring the physical and behavioural adaptations that help them survive in their habitat.
