Program overview
The case of the missing Blue Tongue Lizards!
This rich, student-led program invites your class to embark on a creative, scenario-based investigation right on your school grounds. Students will take on the role of junior detectives, working together to help locate our missing blue tongue lizards—a fun and engaging way to spark curiosity and critical thinking.
Through this hands-on investigation, students will explore their local environment with keen eyes, learning about the variety of living creatures that share their surroundings. They will observe and inquire into both natural and built environments, gaining a deeper understanding of habitats, ecosystems, and the impact of human activity.
This program encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry, allowing students to develop important skills while fostering a connection to their local environment. By blending storytelling, exploration, and environmental education, it creates a memorable and inspiring learning experience for young learners.

Exploring habitat Use our habitat assessment resource to find the perfect spot for lizards and then talk about where students think the best hiding place at your school for a blue tongue would be. |

Build a shelter to hide from predators Collect sticks, leaves and bark and create a shelter for a blue-tongue based on your knowledge of habitat and predators. |

Invertebrate hunt – food for lizards Students search the school grounds for invertebrates. Conduct tree shakes and digs. Can we find any snails for Heidi? |

Bird Search – Who are the lizard's predators? Students use their eagle eyes and hand binoculars to sit and search for birds. |

Acknowledgement of Country All classes together – introduce disappearance of the lizards and brainstorm where we might find them by learning about their favourite things. Brewongle will need the hall or double classroom and AV equipment for this. |

Using the Brewongle medical and welfare form (sent with the confirmation email), inform Brewongle staff of any medical conditions or special requirements prior to the visit This program can be adapted for teachers and students with specific mobility requirements |

Visit our visitor information page to view our weather trigger points for program changes On days where the weather is unsuitable, a Brewongle staff member will contact the organising teacher to discuss alternative arrangements |
