Program overview

This excursion is an exciting exploration of Dharug Country!

Students will engage with Aboriginal cultural learnings through a series of hands-on activities, including shelter building, Dharug language learning, storytelling, ochre painting, and hunting and gathering games.

The day concludes with the joint creation of class Acknowledgements of Country.

This program supports the English K-2 focus areas of oral language and communication, print conventions and creating written texts

Country is Home

Students learn about shelter, water and warmth and build stick shelters

Songlines and Story

Students learn about food, medicine and songlines. Students listen to a story and sing a ‘songline’ song as they collect resources on a bushwalk

Ochre

Students learn about trees, earth and art. Students create ochre and paint symbols on their bodies

Emu Egg Hunt

Students learn about the night sky, seasons and animals. Students play a game that mimics collecting emu eggs

5

Acknowledgement of Country workshop

Students learn about landforms, lore, responsibilities and differences between Welcomes and Acknowledgements. Students create a class Acknowledgement.

Transport

Buses are booked by the visiting school.

A map to the bus parking will be sent with the schools confirmation email. Please ensure you print the map and give to the bus driver the morning of the excursion.

Maximum student numbers are 30 students per class - up to 4 classes per day

No minimum student numbers (instead possible minimum costs)

Supporting teachers and staff Minimum requirement is one teacher per attending class
Program start and finish times

Brewongle arrival time is 9:45 am - departure time is 2 pm

Medical and welfare notifications

Using the Brewongle medical and welfare form (sent with the confirmation email), inform Brewongle staff of any medical conditions or special requirements prior to the visit

This program can be adapted for teachers and students with specific mobility requirements

Adverse weather

On days where the weather is unsuitable, a Brewongle staff member will contact the organising teacher to discuss alternative arrangements
