Aboriginal Culture - Connecting to Country

 

Stage 2 students will learn about local Dharug Culture and will spend the day Connecting to Country.

Students go on a bush resource hunt to learn about traditional Dharug uses of various plants and come back to teach their new found knowledge to their peers. They experience the use of ochre and traditional symbols for storytelling, participate in traditional Indigenous games, as well as watch a story come to life on canvas using coloured sands and traditional Aboriginal symbols.

Activity 1 - Bush Resource Hunt

Students use maps to locate bush resources and learn about the use of native plants for medicine, tool making and food. They return to present and teach their bush resource knowledge to their peers. Students learn to count in Dharug language. 

 

Activity 2 - Storytelling

Students experience the use of ochre and traditional symbols for storytelling, and then share their stories orally with their class. 

 

Activity 3 - Traditional Indigenous Games

Students learn new skills and the importance of games, while participating in target and team games. 

 

Activity 4 - Sand Art

Students watch a story come to life on canvas using coloured sands and traditional Aboriginal symbols.

Buses are booked by the visiting school.

A map to the bus parking will be sent with the schools confirmation email. Please ensure you print the map and give to the bus driver the morning of the excursion.
