Science & Technology - Living world

Join us to complete a hands on, citizen science investigation into pond ecosystems, life cycles and classification. What lives beneath the water and how are these creatures connected? Find out who eats who in the pond and how our watery world is connected!

Pre- and post-excursion lessons will help your students to grasp this new science content and skills in a fun and engaging excursion to Brewongle EEC.

Scientific inquiry questions

  • How can we group living things?
  • What are the similarities and differences between the life cycles of living things?
  • How are environments and living things interdependent?

Syllabus outcomes

  • Questions, plans and conducts scientific investigations, collects and summarises data and communicates using scientific representations ST2- 1WS-S
  • Compares features and characteristics of living and non-living things ST2- 4LW-S.

Activity 1 - Dipnetting

Students discover which bugs live in the Brewongle ponds. They will identify bugs, record data on abundance and discuss the life cycle of various animals in the ponds.

Activity 2 - Classification

How can we group living things by observable features? Students utilise our Earthlab with microscopes and insect and frog models to classify living things and draw them with scratch art.

Activity 3 - Predator Prey

Students will play our food web game to experience how the food web works and learn about the consequences of water pollution.

Activity 4 - Dreamtime Story

Students will learn the story of ‘Tiddalik the frog’ and create a sand art story that they will take back to school.
